I Feel Personally Offended

by Accuvue's commercials.  It's a soapbox.  Two posts in a row are soapbox issues.  I'm way more PO'd about this one though.

Accuvue has a new commercial.  It's a teenage girl in speech class who is getting up to give her speech and says that "one day my office will be oval" and then she changes her glasses for one day contacts.  Ooooooh man, makes me so mad!!!!!!!  You know what?  Glasses won't keep you from being president.  Does anyone remember Franklin Roosevelt?  He was one of our greatest presidents ever.  He pulled the country out of the depression with his New Deal programs.  And hey, did ya notice??  He was also paralyzed!  Didn't keep him down, well so to speak.

I know that to society appearances are the end all, be all, but that doesn't mean that's the way it should be.  It doesn't mean that appearances ARE everything!  I have glasses, but my husband loves me anyway, he even thinks I'm cute.  A lot of the time, especially when I was in high school, I felt self conscious about my glasses.  I wasn't as pretty as the other girls.  I tried to wear contacts but they burned my eyeballs from my skull and scratched them.  Not so fun.  Turns out, my face looks flat without glasses.  I've worn them since 3rd grade.  I was the only kid in my grade with glasses, and let me tell you, I was rockin' some bifocals!  WHY oh WHY must we teach girls that their value lies in their face, boobs, and butt?

Glasses don't make the woman.  Glasses don't make the president.  Accuvue needs to get a new advertising campaign.  It is beyond a low blow to play on girls' insecurities by telling them they will only achieve their dreams if they ditch the glasses.
